Weekly Updates for April 4th

Happy first week of April!  We are counting down the days and it has really flown!  We will continue working toward completing our standards over the next month and half.  Please note the important dates coming up this week and next (long term dates were sent home via Dr. Poe's email).  A great word of THANKS to all of our families that help to collect and made donations during our Hawk Walk!  Congratulations to Mrs. Derry's class for winning the entire school competition.

Friday, April 8th- Mrs. Derry's Birthday!!
Saturday, April 9th- Tentative Garden Build Day
Monday, April 11th- Smokies Baseball Game
Thursday, April 14th- HVA to perform play at HVES in the morning

Here is what we are doing this week:

Math:  Derry - will continue and complete decimal unit this week. There will be homework assignments.  Please check the agenda daily for specifics.
Fortson- We will have a metric unit assessment on Monday and then move to lines, rays and angles unit for the next few weeks.  There will be homework assignments this week.  Please check the agenda nightly.

Fortson HawkEye- we will continue our Bridges Unit. Make sure to check out the bridges unit page on the blog for some great pictures and updates on our toothpick bridge challenge.

Reading/ELA:  This week will continue our Social Studies integration focus. We will be reading articles as well as looking at primary sources about the northern and southern economies of the 1850s.  Students will be using the SS Weekly #29 this week.  Please check with your child's agenda for specific assignments for this week.
*Fortson will have a Status of the Class on Friday.  Chapter book required!

Grammar focus this week is prepositions.

Social Studies: Life in the North and South. Weekly 29. We are also still discussing leaders Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson. We will also be taking a vocabulary quiz. Derry's class is Tuesday and Fortson's will be Wednesday. They worked on the vocab last week and can use this as their study guide.

Science:  This week, we will continue our energy unit.  We will be creating some items for our interactive notebook and adding several different types of energy sources that we haven't discussed as of yet.  We will not have a science assessment this week. However there will be an assignment this week.
